Internships
Working in the nonprofit, political, and media fields gave me the opportunity to not only learn from professionals, but to collaborate with them. From interning for former Vice President Kamala Harris’s videographer to composing memos about issues affecting low-income New Yorkers, my internship experiences opened my eyes to how to be a valuable part of a professional team.
Cohen Borschow Media
Research & Writing Intern
I worked with former VP Harris’s videographer to research, write, and publish pieces about media sexism. The research I conducted about the use of first and last names for male and female politicians is to be published in a piece for The Contrarian. I also published an article titled The Day that Boys Got Their Periods about bringing period cramp simulators to my school and stigma surrounding the menstrual cycle. Many of our opinions are constructed (both consciously and subconsciously) through media, and I believe inspecting media representations is a vital aspect of exploring gender expectations and stereotypes.
Empowerfly
Research Intern
I collaborated with a team of interns to write a research paper examining the effects of popular media tropes on gender roles. This internship helped me develop skills to work with a team in a professional setting.
Mobilization for Justice
Intern
I helped this legal nonprofit by researching, sitting in on client intake meetings, and composing memos about the disparities low-income New Yorkers face every day. Through this work, I gained insight into the intersectionality of the issues (for example, housing) facing low-income New Yorkers.
